I made a back rest from a large day-pack by cutting off the shoulder harnesses and placing a vinyl 8 gallon household trash can inside. I cut out the bottom and cut down the rigid top and it gives a modest amount of support without anything in the backpack and yet I can use the pack to store things when I need. I also tie it on with my cargo net. It seems fairly secure and I can really lean into it.
It beats big bucks.
